Flag of Canada  British  Columbia
Saturday, May 17, 2014
At last after five (5) months on board the M.S. Amsterdam, we finally got back home and disembarked in Vancouver, British Columbia.

On the World Cruise, we visited 38 ports and 29 countries; 25 beautiful islands and five continents.  We visited world class cities as in Singapore, Sydney, Cape Town and many others.  We visited island paradise and remote and hard to reach islands.  We stayed all day at Easter Island which is one the hardest places to visit.

We had so many wildlife encounter. to name a few , kangaroo, sloths, monkeys, elephants, tigers, crocodiles, and even snakes.   We used all kinds of transportation such as hop on hop off buses, jeepney, trishaws, calesas, tricycles, camels and even donkeys!

It was definitely a trip of a lifetime and I'm glad that we made it!

Today, we  met up with our good friends  Tess and Vern Brown.  We showed them around the ship and after breakfast, my reward was a trip to my favorite store, Ross!  We also got our Costco fix by buying our favorite Costco hotdogs!

Just another night and we will be home in Vancouver.  The rest of the day was spent packing the suitcases and boxing some of the souvenirs we bought in various places.  Our thanks to Cenon who made boxes for us and also gave us a surprise bag!

Seven (7) Hours in San Diego , California

Flag of United States  California
Tuesday, May 13, 2014
Today we had only seven (7) hours in San Diego.  I used up my time, calling my family in North America and my sick nephew, Ivy, in the Philippines.

We had a free shuttle bus to the mall and we checked into Starbucks so we could get a free wifi after purchasing a cup of coffee for each of us.

Emails done and phone calls made, we hurried back to the ship for our  early afternoon sail away.

Wow! Que Bon- Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Flag of Mexico  Baja California
Saturday, May 10, 2014
Cabo San Lucas has a certain vibe.  It was sunny and lively and clean.

Our guide told us, " NO Senorita, you cannot swim today, it is not allowed because the water is very rough," he exclaimed.

Sebastian was our guide on the glass bottom boat.  He was with his son Sebastian Jr.  There was an excitement as I see the big fish around the boat and also through the glass bottom. Sebastian took a sharp right turn.  On your right, "it's called the lovers beach and you can see why,"  "That one over there, we called it divorce beach,"  Sebastian explained smilingly.

I can see why he said we cannot jump off the boat and swim .  The water was very choppy and there's no way I could swim in open water in that situation.

After about an hour going around the glass bottom boat, we decided to just do nothing and stay on the beach.  We didn't even had a chair but there was a palapa umbrella and that was enough. There was about a mile stretch of sand.  It is one of the famous ones for locals and can be crowded at times but today it was a more tranquil scene.

After about one hour, we walked to the docks and looked for the food truck that was recommended by Sebastian.  Located behind the tourists shops and souvenir stalls, a food truck in the parking lot serves the best margarita in town.  The owner, Miguel also cooks fresh fish (catch of the day) and oysters. Locals dig into salsa and Mexican seafood  gazpacho full of shrimps and clams.    Our reward, was a plateful of oysters

Apart form the beach, Cabo San Lucas offers plenty of shopping and it is best discovered in the central plaza.  You can find something for everyone in Cabo San Lucas.  Whether you swim or not, you'll be hooked from the moment you arrive.

Hola ! for Interesting Port Stop -Puerto Chiapas, Mexico

Flag of Mexico  Chiapas
Thursday, May 8, 2014
The service bus to the town was very expensive at US$20.00/person so we decided to walk outside the visitors center's gate and waited for a local transport.  A few minutes passed by and soon a minivan came by.  I asked the driver in Spanish if he was heading to town central and how much was the fare.  "Si, senora, dos para persona!"

With that, we hopped inside the crammed minivan.  I offered the HAL pins to my seatmates and she thanked me after she kept them away in her purse.  Soon we were talking in English.  she said, "don't worry, I will show you where to get off."

It took us forty five minutes to get to town.  The lady besides me pointed where we should cross the street and she assured us that we will find the plaza after criss- crossing our way inside the tiny alleyway in the public market .  Walking inside the market, we were greeted by very friendly vendors.  They asked where are we from in their broken English.  Time seems to turn backwards.

A few minutes from the market is the central plaza and local restaurants are just a stone's throw away.  Bert and I went inside a local restaurant where there's a lot of people.  We asked for the menu and we were amazed at the price.  Breakfast specials consists of huevos rancheros with coffee and bread was less than US$3.00 a plate.  I ordered a big mug of hot chocolate for which
Puerto Chiapas is famous for and a plate of quesadila.  Bert ordered a steak and coffee.  Our bill came to the equivalent of US$7.00 total.

At the plaza, it was splendid to see the locals coming and going.  Several men lined-up ready to shine shoes.  A few boys sat on the rotunda people watching.  At the traffic light, the policeman directs traffic.  Across the road, there was a vendor selling candies and newspapers.  Another stand had a vendor selling roasted corns on husks reminding me of one of my childhood snacks.  I tried to talk to a bystander asking him where the ship's service bus drop off was and I thought my Spanish was getting better.

When the bus came, the woman informed us that only those with tickets will be prioritized and they cannot allow us to get in the bus unless there are vacant seats,  Fair enough, but we decided to get a cab and in no time, we were back at the port, even ahead of the service bus!
We took a chance and it paid off.

3rd Time Around - Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

Wednesday, May 7, 2014
A fashion show was held at the visitors center.  Several men and women showcased the Guatemalan traditional attire from their collective past.  One by one, they walked on the stage
introducing their attire tracing history from the very beginning of their ancestral costumes to the most recent ones.  Watching the fashion show was like a birds eye view of their history.

After watching the show, I made a short trip around the shops and bargained for some small souvenirs that I wanted to give away to the crew.
